Private jet charter from Dar es Salaam: live estimates by route, Zanzibar and southern circuit links, and the based fleet.
Julius Nyerere International (HTDA/DAR) is the mainland gateway to two very different markets: the Zanzibar archipelago, minutes away across the channel, and Tanzania’s southern safari circuit at Nyerere and Ruaha, which is remote enough that light aircraft are the only practical way in.
Most charter demand from Dar es Salaam is measured in tens of minutes rather than hours. Zanzibar is barely a flight at all — the aircraft is level for a few minutes before starting down. On sectors that short, the price has almost nothing to do with flight time and almost everything to do with the aircraft’s minimum charge and whether it has to fly in empty to collect you.
That is the key thing to understand about Dar es Salaam: our fleet data shows only one type based here. Anything larger than a Caravan is usually positioning in from Nairobi, Zanzibar or further afield, and the empty leg is priced into the quote. For a short hop that positioning cost can exceed the flight itself, which is why a same-day return often works out far better value per leg than a one-way.

Types with a home base at HTDA in our fleet data. Departing on a based aircraft avoids the empty positioning leg, which is the single biggest saving available on a short sector.
Tanzania has two rainy seasons. The long rains run from roughly March to May and are the wettest stretch of the year on the coast. The short rains fall around November and December and are lighter and more broken. Neither reliably stops flights from Dar es Salaam itself, but both matter for unpaved southern circuit strips, which can close after sustained rain.
Safari demand peaks in the dry months from June to October, which is also when game viewing in the southern parks is at its best and the light aircraft fleet across the region is most heavily committed. The Christmas and New Year period is the second peak, driven by Zanzibar rather than the bush.
Tanzania is manageable administratively. Domestic flights, including Zanzibar, are straightforward, though Zanzibar operates its own immigration process for arriving passengers even on domestic sectors, which surprises people. Regional flights to Kenya, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique need their own landing permissions in working days. Private departures are handled away from the main terminal and are quick on the day.
Across the 8 routes priced on this page, whole-aircraft estimates run from about US$3,400 on the shortest sector to US$16,900 on the longest. Charter is priced per aircraft rather than per seat, so the cost is the same whether one person travels or the cabin is full, and the positioning leg flown to collect you is included in every figure shown.
Charter flights use Julius Nyerere International Airport (HTDA / DAR), with a longest runway of 9,843 ft at 182 ft elevation. Private departures are handled through the general aviation terminal or an FBO where one operates, which is a considerably faster process than the main passenger terminal.
Our fleet data shows 1 types based at HTDA: Cessna Grand Caravan EX. A based aircraft does not have to fly an empty leg to reach you, so quotes on these types are usually materially cheaper than the same trip on an aircraft positioning in from another country.
The longest route priced here is Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg at 1,316 NM. Whether a given sector is flown non-stop depends on the aircraft: light jets and turboprops will need a technical stop on longer legs, while a heavy or ultra-long-range type will fly it directly. The aircraft list on each route page shows which types clear the distance.
Twenty-four to forty-eight hours is comfortable for a domestic or regional trip when a suitable aircraft is already nearby. Cross-border flights need longer, because overflight and landing permits in several African states are issued in working days rather than hours, and a weekend or public holiday in the destination country can add a day. Same-day departures are possible but depend entirely on what is already positioned within reach.
