The Southern Circle

The most efficient high-end circuit in Africa: a tight loop through private safari country, Victoria Falls, the Okavango and Cape Town, built around Southern Africa’s deepest charter market.

This is the itinerary I would use when the client wants maximum experience with minimum dead time. The distances are short, Johannesburg and Cape Town have strong charter depth, and the only aircraft changes happen where they actually improve access.

The route I would use

Days 1–3 — Sabi Sand, South Africa

Start from Johannesburg and go straight into the bush. The trip begins with wildlife rather than a city night, and Sabi Sand is easy to pair with a paved jet gateway at Skukuza.

Where I would stay: Cheetah Plains for an exclusive-villa style safari with a high privacy ceiling, or Lion Sands River Lodge if the client prefers a more conventional lodge structure.

Aviation: Johannesburg (JNB/HLA) → Skukuza (SZK) is roughly 190 nm and typically 50–65 minutes by light jet or King Air. Continue by road, helicopter or lodge aircraft depending on the exact property.

Days 4–5 — Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Move from safari to a landscape experience. Two nights is enough if the Falls and Zambezi are the focus; three if the client wants a slower river day.

Where I would stay: Matetsi Victoria Falls for privacy and a riverfront setting away from the busier town hotels.
Check Matetsi Victoria Falls on Expedia ↗

Aviation: Skukuza (SZK) → Victoria Falls (VFA) is about 540 nm and usually around 1½–1¾ hours by light/midsize jet.

Days 6–8 — Okavango Delta, Botswana

This is where the aircraft should get smaller. Use Maun only as the gateway; the actual experience starts at the lodge strip inside the Delta.

Where I would stay: Xigera Safari Lodge for design, water access and a strong private-luxury product. Mombo is the alternative when game density matters more than architecture.
Check Xigera Safari Lodge on Expedia ↗

Aviation: VFA → Maun (MUB) is roughly 180 nm and generally 50–65 minutes. From MUB continue another 20–45 minutes by bush aircraft to the selected camp strip.

Days 9–11 — Cape Town

Finish with the highest-service, lowest-friction chapter. Use one full day for the Peninsula or city and one for the Winelands. If the journey is 13 days, add the extra time here rather than another airport.

Where I would stay: Ellerman House for a discreet Bantry Bay finish, or an exclusive-use villa for a larger family/entourage.

Aviation: lodge strip → Maun by bush aircraft, then Maun (MUB) → Cape Town (CPT) is about 880 nm and typically 2¼–2½ hours by light/midsize jet.

Flight plan at a glance

Sector Practical routing Indicative time
Johannesburg → Sabi Sand gateway JNB/HLA → SZK · light jet/King Air ~50–65 min
Sabi Sand → Victoria Falls SZK → VFA · light/midsize jet ~1½–1¾ hr
Victoria Falls → Okavango VFA → MUB, then camp aircraft ~50–65 min + ~20–45 min
Okavango → Cape Town Camp strip → MUB, then MUB → CPT ~20–45 min + ~2¼–2½ hr
Cape Town → Johannesburg CPT → JNB/HLA ~1¾–2 hr
Why this circuit often prices well: the long-range repositioning problem is small. A Johannesburg-based aircraft can start and end close to home, and the expensive jet legs remain short.

Best season

June to September is the strongest wildlife-led window. The Lowveld is dry, the Okavango flood is usually well developed, and Victoria Falls still has meaningful water. Cape Town is cooler and wetter, so if the city is equally important, late September or October gives a better overall balance.

How I would quote it

Ask for the jet sectors as one rotation and treat the lodge aircraft as separate access legs. That gives you a cleaner view of where the charter budget actually goes. Use the charter search for JNB–SZK, SZK–VFA, MUB–CPT and CPT–JNB, then compare with a mission quote from an operator.
