Nairobi to Maasai Mara by Private Charter

Guide to Nairobi–Maasai Mara private charter flights, including Wilson Airport, Mara airstrips, flight time, aircraft choices, baggage and safari transfers.

Kenya safari corridor

Nairobi → Maasai Mara, without building your day around a shared safari flight.

For most private groups the question is not whether the Mara is reachable by air. It is which Mara airstrip gets you closest to your camp, and which aircraft can use it comfortably with your passengers and luggage.

Airport amenities: what is actually available?

Wilson is a working city airport with airline-specific passenger facilities. Ol Kiombo, used here as a representative Maasai Mara arrival strip, is a bush airstrip. The difference is significant, so plan food, cash and connectivity before leaving Nairobi.

Java House is the clearest named option on the airport campus.

🚻 Toilets
Basic or variable — confirm with your lodge/handler rather than assuming full airport facilities.

No proper airport restaurant or café; carry water/snacks if you may have to wait.
🏷 Restaurant chain
None.
💳 ATM / forex
No — arrange cash in Nairobi or at your lodge.
📶 Wi‑Fi / charging
No dedicated airport service to rely on.
🪑 Waiting area
Basic shelter / benches rather than a conventional terminal lounge.
🚙 Lodge pickup
Usually the important amenity: camp or lodge staff meet arriving passengers for the safari transfer.
Important: Maasai Mara airstrips are not identical. Ol Kiombo is shown on the map as a representative arrival point; Musiara, Keekorok, Mara Serena, Kichwa Tembo, Olare and other strips can have different facilities and lodge-transfer arrangements.

The airstrip matters more than the aircraft

The Maasai Mara is not served by one single airport. Camps and conservancies use different strips across a large area. Mara Serena, Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara, Kichwa Tembo and Olare are among the names you may encounter, but the useful answer is much simpler: ask your lodge which strip they collect from.

Do this before requesting the aircraft.
A cheaper flight to the wrong side of the Mara can leave you with a surprisingly long vehicle transfer after landing.

Wilson is usually the cleanest way out of Nairobi

Starting in Nairobi

Wilson is the natural safari-aviation airport. It is where many of the aircraft suited to Mara strips are based, and it avoids forcing a bush-flight mission through Kenya’s main international airport.

Connecting from an international flight

If you land at JKIA first, treat the transfer to Wilson as a separate leg of the journey. Immigration, baggage collection and Nairobi traffic can matter more than the actual Mara flight time.

What should you charter?

For this corridor, choosing a bigger aircraft is not automatically an upgrade. The best aircraft is the one that fits the strip, passengers and luggage without turning a simple safari sector into an airport problem.

Caravan-type

The practical safari choice. Good when simplicity, airstrip access and group utility matter most.

PC-12-type

A stronger premium option when you want a pressurised cabin, useful payload and good short-field flexibility.

King Air-type

Useful for private groups that prefer twin-engine turboprop capability and a more business-aviation feel.

Private charter or scheduled safari flight?

Scheduled makes sense when…

  • you are one or two travellers
  • the timetable fits the lodge transfer
  • you do not mind possible intermediate stops
  • price matters more than departure-time control

Private makes sense when…

  • the whole family or group travels together
  • you want to choose the departure time
  • you are connecting from another private flight
  • you want the most convenient operationally suitable strip

The bit people underestimate: luggage

A Gulfstream-style packing habit does not translate well to a safari aircraft. Large rigid cases, several heavy bags or professional camera equipment can change the aircraft choice even when the passenger count stays the same.

How the price really builds up

The passenger flight is short, but the quote is not simply “one hour × hourly rate.” The operator has to price the entire aircraft movement.

Aircraft positioning + passenger sector + airstrip / handling + waiting or empty return

That is why two apparently identical Nairobi–Mara trips can quote differently. An aircraft already at Wilson with a useful onward movement can be materially more efficient than one that has to reposition empty.

Questions travellers actually ask

How long is Nairobi to the Maasai Mara by air?

A direct Wilson–Mara flight is typically around 45–60 minutes. The exact time changes with the destination strip, aircraft and routing.

Can I fly from JKIA straight to the Mara?

Some missions can use JKIA, but Wilson is the main Nairobi base for safari-oriented flying and is usually the more natural departure point for a Mara airstrip.

Can a jet land in the Maasai Mara?

That depends on the specific strip, runway, aircraft performance and operating conditions. Turboprops and suitable light aircraft are often the more practical choice.

Does the aircraft have to stay while I am on safari?

No. For a multi-night stay, dropping the passengers and repositioning the aircraft can be more economical than keeping aircraft and crew in the Mara.

Is private charter priced per passenger?

Normally the aircraft is chartered as a complete mission. Passenger count matters because it influences aircraft choice and payload, but the quote is not simply a fixed seat fare.
