Private Jet from Johannesburg to Nairobi

Johannesburg to Nairobi by private jet: about four hours non-stop, why a light jet’s fuel stop changes the maths, Lanseria versus O.R. Tambo, Kenyan entry and same-day safari connections.

A private jet from Johannesburg to Nairobi flies non-stop in about four hours in a midsize or heavy jet. Light jets can do it too, but they stop for fuel on the way and take five to six hours. It is the main business corridor between Southern and East Africa, and the first leg of a lot of Kenyan safaris.

Worth knowing first: Don’t assume a light jet is the cheap option here. Because it has to stop for fuel, a Hawker 800XP or Challenger 605 flying non-stop often prices close to the light jets and saves an hour or more. The live table shows where the line falls on the day.

How long is the flight from Johannesburg to Nairobi?

The great-circle distance is about 1,570 nautical miles. A Challenger 605, Legacy 600 or Gulfstream flies it non-stop in about four hours, and a Hawker 800XP in around four hours 20 minutes. Light jets such as the CJ3+ and Phenom 300 stop for fuel, usually in Zambia, Malawi or Tanzania, and arrive after five to six hours.

Leaving Johannesburg

Both Lanseria and O.R. Tambo handle South African emigration for international departures. Lanseria is quick and is where most light and midsize jets are based. O.R. Tambo suits anyone arriving on a long-haul flight and is home to most of the heavy jets, so it is often the cheaper start for those.

Arriving in Nairobi

You clear Kenyan immigration and customs at Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO). Many visitors need Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorisation before departure, so check the current rules for every passenger. From the airport, the Nairobi Expressway has made the run to Westlands far more predictable than it used to be, usually 20 to 30 minutes; the old road through town can take well over an hour at peak.

Safari connection

Straight on to the Mara

Most safari flights to the Maasai Mara, Laikipia and Amboseli leave from Wilson Airport, on the other side of the city from Jomo Kenyatta. If you land by early afternoon you can often connect the same day; later than that, a night in Nairobi and a morning bush flight is the calmer plan. Bush flights usually limit luggage to about 15 kg per person in soft bags, so pack for that leg, not the jet.

Which aircraft suits the route?

For a business trip with three or four people, a Hawker 800XP is a sensible middle ground: non-stop, a decent cabin and room for bags. Families heading on safari, or anyone who wants a stand-up cabin and room to sleep, are better served by a Challenger 605 or Legacy 600. A light jet only makes sense if the budget is tight and the fuel stop does not matter.

What moves the price

The aircraft type and its base, the fuel stop, and what the aircraft does in Kenya. A week’s safari usually means the aircraft goes home and comes back, and the engine compares that with keeping it in Nairobi.

Quotes are usually in US dollars, though South African operators will give rand on request. At about R16.60 to the dollar in late October 2026, every US$1,000 is roughly R16,600.

What to send for an accurate quote

Send your dates and preferred departure time, which Johannesburg airport suits you, passenger names and nationalities, luggage, any onward safari flight and your return plans. Ask whether positioning, fuel stops, handling, permits, parking and crew costs are included.

Johannesburg to Nairobi private jet prices by group size and trip

The same route priced for different trips. Charter is sold by the aircraft, not the seat, so the cost per person falls as more people fly, and a return is often far cheaper than two one-ways.

For four passengers, a same-day return costs about US$47,500 in a Citation Mustang, 1.9 times the one-way estimate of US$25,400. Flying back after three nights costs about US$49,300; the engine compares keeping the aircraft and crew with you against two separate rotations and uses the cheaper.
