Private Jet from Nairobi

Private jet charter from Nairobi: live whole-aircraft estimates by route, the JKIA and Wilson split, based fleet and seasonality.

Nairobi is East Africa’s busiest private aviation market, and the first decision is which airport you leave from. Long-range and international departures use Jomo Kenyatta International (HKJK/NBO). Almost everything safari-bound leaves from Wilson Airport (HKNW) on the other side of the city, which holds the largest concentration of based light aircraft anywhere in the region. The routes priced below depart JKIA.

JKIA or Wilson

The split is practical rather than administrative. Wilson’s runway is short by jet standards, so it suits turboprops and light singles flying into the Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and the Laikipia conservancies — the aircraft that can actually use a 900-metre murram strip at the other end. JKIA takes the jets, handles customs and immigration for international departures, and is where a long-range aircraft will be parked.

If your trip is Nairobi to another capital, you want JKIA. If it ends at a camp airstrip, you want Wilson, and the aircraft will be a Caravan or a King Air rather than a jet. Trips that combine both — arrive internationally, transfer to a bush flight — are routine, but budget the cross-city transfer, which in Nairobi traffic is the least predictable part of the day.

Departing from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Aircraft based in Nairobi

Types with a home base at HKJK in our fleet data. Departing on a based aircraft avoids the empty positioning leg, which is the single biggest saving available on a short sector.

Altitude changes the aircraft you need

JKIA sits at roughly 5,300 ft. Thinner air lengthens the take-off run and cuts the weight an aircraft can lift, so a type that would fly a given sector non-stop from the coast may need a fuel stop or a reduced payload out of Nairobi. On a warm afternoon the effect is larger still. This is why the aircraft list on a Nairobi route sometimes looks shorter than the same distance flown from Mombasa or Dar es Salaam, and it is worth checking rather than assuming.

When to fly

Two rainy seasons shape the calendar: the long rains from roughly March to May, and the short rains through November into December. Neither reliably stops a flight from JKIA, but they matter enormously for onward bush strips, which are unpaved and can close after heavy rain.

Safari demand peaks from July to October around the wildebeest migration, and again over the Christmas and New Year period. In those windows the based light fleet at Wilson is genuinely stretched, and booking two or three weeks out rather than two or three days makes a real difference to both price and choice of aircraft.

Permits and ground time

Kenya is one of the more straightforward jurisdictions in the region for charter. Domestic flights need little notice. Regional departures to Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda are routine, though each still needs its own landing permission and these are counted in working days. Handling at JKIA is through the general aviation terminal rather than the main hall, which keeps the departure process to a fraction of a scheduled airline check-in.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private jet from Nairobi cost?

Across the 34 routes priced on this page, whole-aircraft estimates run from about US$2,000 on the shortest sector to US$34,800 on the longest. Charter is priced per aircraft rather than per seat, so the cost is the same whether one person travels or the cabin is full, and the positioning leg flown to collect you is included in every figure shown.

Which airport do private jets use in Nairobi?

Charter flights use Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (HKJK / NBO), with a longest runway of 13,507 ft at 5,330 ft elevation. Private departures are handled through the general aviation terminal or an FBO where one operates, which is a considerably faster process than the main passenger terminal.

What aircraft are based in Nairobi?

Our fleet data shows 8 types based at HKJK: Citation CJ3+, Hawker 800XP, Learjet 45XR, Embraer Phenom 300, Citation XLS+, King Air 350i, Challenger 605, Beechcraft 1900D. A based aircraft does not have to fly an empty leg to reach you, so quotes on these types are usually materially cheaper than the same trip on an aircraft positioning in from another country.

How far can you fly non-stop from Nairobi?

The longest route priced here is Nairobi to Cape Town at 2,214 NM. Whether a given sector is flown non-stop depends on the aircraft: light jets and turboprops will need a technical stop on longer legs, while a heavy or ultra-long-range type will fly it directly. The aircraft list on each route page shows which types clear the distance.

How much notice is needed to charter from Nairobi?

Twenty-four to forty-eight hours is comfortable for a domestic or regional trip when a suitable aircraft is already nearby. Cross-border flights need longer, because overflight and landing permits in several African states are issued in working days rather than hours, and a weekend or public holiday in the destination country can add a day. Same-day departures are possible but depend entirely on what is already positioned within reach.
