Cape Town International (FACT/CPT) sits close to sea level, which makes it one of the easier major departure points in Africa from a performance standpoint — aircraft lift full payload here that would be weight-restricted out of Johannesburg. Cape Town runs on the southern summer. The constraint at Cape Town is wind rather than precipitation. The south-easter that blows through summer — known locally as the Cape Doctor — can be strong and persistent, and while the runway alignment handles it well, crosswind limits occasionally hold light aircraft when larger types are unaffected. Winter brings frontal systems off the Atlantic with rain and low cloud, which affects visibility more than it affects wind.
Neither pattern regularly cancels charter flights. Both are worth knowing about if your schedule has no slack in it, and both argue for morning departures where the day allows.
As elsewhere in South Africa, the administration is light. Domestic trips can be arranged at short notice; regional departures to Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique need their own landing permissions but are entirely routine.
