Private Jet from Cape Town to Durban

Cape Town to Durban by private jet: a little over two hours by light jet, why this direction is often cheaper, King Shaka arrivals, Garden Route stopovers and quotes in rand.

A private jet from Cape Town to Durban takes a little over two hours in a light jet, and about three in a turboprop. It is the long coast-to-coast hop across South Africa, nearly 1,300 km, with fewer airline flights than either city’s link to Johannesburg. That gap is a big part of why people charter it.

Worth knowing first: Because a number of light jets live in Cape Town, this direction is often cheaper than the same flight from Durban. If you are going and coming back, ask for the return in the same request so the aircraft is not priced as two separate positioning trips.

How long is the flight from Cape Town to Durban?

The great-circle distance is about 690 nautical miles. A Phenom 300, CJ3+ or Challenger 350 does it in a little over two hours, and a Citation Mustang in about two and a half. Turboprops such as the King Air 350i and Pilatus PC-12 take from two hours 50 minutes to three and a quarter hours. By road it is more than 1,600 km and two long days, whether you take the N2 along the coast or cut through the Karoo.

Leaving Cape Town

Private flights leave from Cape Town International (CPT), where you can arrive shortly before departure and drive close to the aircraft. In summer the south-easter can make the climb-out bumpy; in winter, roughly June to August, cold fronts bring strong north-westerly winds and rain. Neither usually stops flights, but it is worth knowing if someone in the group is a nervous flyer.

Arriving at King Shaka

King Shaka International (DUR) is at La Mercy, about 35 km north of central Durban. Umhlanga is 15 to 20 minutes away, Ballito about 25, and the city centre or the Berea roughly 30 to 40 minutes outside rush hour. If you are going on to a game reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, a light aircraft from King Shaka saves about three hours on the road.

Coast to coast

Fly over the Garden Route, or stop on it

The route passes over the Garden Route and the Eastern Cape. If you want to break the trip, George and Gqeberha both have airports that take business jets, and some travellers do Cape Town, a few days around Plettenberg Bay and then Durban as one charter itinerary. Ask the operator to price the legs together; one aircraft flying the whole loop often beats separate one-ways.

Which aircraft fits Cape Town to Durban?

For four to seven passengers, a CJ3+ or Phenom 300 is the obvious choice: about two hours and a proper jet cabin. A Challenger 350 takes the same time with a much bigger cabin, for groups of eight or nine or anyone who wants to stand up. Turboprops save money at the cost of 45 minutes to an hour, which matters more on a sector this long than on a short hop.

What moves the price

The aircraft, where it is based, and what it does after Durban. Light jets already in Cape Town keep the outbound cost down; anything that has to fly in from Johannesburg first costs more. For a stay of a few days, the engine compares keeping the aircraft at King Shaka with two separate rotations and shows the cheaper option. The December holidays are the busiest weeks on both coasts.

Operators quote in rand on request. At about R16.60 to the dollar in late October 2026, every US$1,000 is roughly R16,600.

What to send for an accurate quote

Send the date and preferred departure time, passenger count, luggage (golf bags, surfboards and anything bulky), where you are going after Durban, any stopover you are considering and your return plans. Ask whether positioning, handling, parking and crew costs are included.

Cape Town to Durban private jet prices by group size and trip

The same route priced for different trips. Charter is sold by the aircraft, not the seat, so the cost per person falls as more people fly, and a return is often far cheaper than two one-ways.

How much is a private jet from Cape Town to Durban for 8 passengers?

About US$16,800 one-way for the whole aircraft in a Cessna Grand Caravan EX (4h 34m in the air), or roughly US$2,100 per seat. For two passengers the cheapest option is US$13,500. These are live estimates including positioning, airport and navigation fees.

How much does a return private jet from Cape Town to Durban cost?

For four passengers, a same-day return costs about US$18,600 in a Citation Mustang, 1.4 times the one-way estimate of US$13,500. Flying back after three nights costs about US$27,700; the engine compares keeping the aircraft and crew with you against two separate rotations and uses the cheaper. A one-way price already pays for the aircraft to fly home empty, which is why a return costs far less than two one-ways.

Estimates as of 30 October 2026: whole aircraft in US dollars, including positioning, airport and navigation fees; returns include crew overnight and standby costs or two rotations, whichever is cheaper. The operator confirms the final price. Compare every route in the Africa Private Jet Price Index.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private jet from Cape Town to Durban?
The live table on this page prices every jet and turboprop that can fly the route for four passengers, one-way, with positioning and fees included. Light jets based in Cape Town are usually the lowest-priced jets; heavy jets cost three to four times as much.
How long is the private flight from Cape Town to Durban?
A little over two hours in a light or super-midsize jet, about two and a half in a Citation Mustang, and two hours 50 minutes to three and a quarter hours in a turboprop.

Yes. George and Gqeberha take business jets, and Plettenberg Bay suits smaller aircraft. Ask for the whole itinerary in one request.

Smaller aircraft can fly direct to some reserve airstrips. With a jet, land at King Shaka and connect by light aircraft or road.
